Wired 14.03: Sky Dayton Gets Mobile
Wired 14.03: Sky Dayton Gets Mobile: This is a very interesting article, about the guy that started EarthLink, and how is trying to create a virtual mobile phone operator inspired in SK Telecom. What I found more intesresting is that it shows how advanced Korea is on mobile communications.
Jordi Ros just send me an email about this friday, he has decided to stay on a startup that has SK Telecom as customer, refussing an offer from HP Labs. Also I've read news about how Samsung has released phones for Wibro networks, which is a pure IP networks.
On the article, Sky Dayton explains how he sees devices being able to switch fromn 3G networks to Wi-Fi or Wibro networks.
Josep Bori who is a analyst at Deutch Bank in Mahatan, told me that the big telecom companies see this thing coming, and that they are working on providing the unified infrasructure that will allow a device to move fronm 3G to Wi-Fi networks while sharing the same identity and a unified way of charging the people.
The challenge is that you can move to hotel or to an airport and that your carrier will cross charge the airport for the service. While in the hotel within the Wi-Fi coverage you will have access to the services with teh quality you would expect from a broandband connection. When somebody calls you from a PC (like Skype) you would be able to to a video conference. The pearson on the PC should be able to call you, just by using your regular phone number.
When you are in a rural area, with 3G or GSM, then the level of services will be different, and a regular GSM operator will be the one that will charge you.
